Indoor tanning is a way to get a tan without outdoor sun exposure. Approximately 10 percent of Americans visit an indoor tanning facility each year, according to the Indoor Tanning Association. Indoor tanning equipment, such as tanning booths and beds, emit ultraviolet (UV) rays. The sun naturally emits 3 types of UV rays, which are: UV-A, UV-B and UV-C. The UV-C rays are the shortest and the most harmful to your skin, while the UV-A rays are the longest and least harmful to your skin. To help protect your skin, tanning equipment only emits UV-A and UV-B rays. However, too much exposure to the ultraviolet rays, whether through indoor tanning equipment or naturally in the sun, can be harmful to your skin. Use these tips to get a good indoor tan and protect your skin.

Understand how indoor tanning beds work

The skin’s epidermis, or top layer, contains melanocytes, which are cells that produce melanin when stimulated with ultraviolet light. When you sit under an tanning bed or in a tanning booth, the lamps stimulate the melanocytes to produce melanin, which appears as a dark pigment on the epidermis. The melanin is produced by your body as a way to protect you from further sun exposure. The longer the exposure to the tanning equipment’s UV rays, the more melanin that is stimulated.

Determine your skin type.

Most professionals at indoor tanning facilities can help you determine your skin type. Skin types range from Type 1, which is very light skin that burns immediately, to Type 5, which is dark skin that tans easily. Your skin type will help you determine how long and how frequently to tan indoors.

Set a tanning schedule recommended for your skin type.

Professionals recommend a tanning schedule using incremental exposure times. These exposure times should be based on your skin type, and will help your skin develop a tan gradually without burning. For most skin types, a few tanning sessions will be required for your skin to oxidize the melanin and result in darker skin.

A Tanning Schedule

Start slowly and gradually increase your exposure over time. Some tanning facilities start all new customers off with 5-minute tanning sessions and gradually increase to 12-minute (or longer) sessions. Because tanning lamps differ in UV strength and output, there is no formula for comparing indoor and outdoor exposure times. Consult the facility’s staff to help you determine optimum exposure times.
Wait at least 48 hours between tanning sessions to avoid skin damage. Daily UV exposure can cause skin damage. However, if you wait too long between indoor tanning sessions, your tan may start to fade. Most indoor tanning professionals recommend 3 tanning sessions a week until a tan is developed, and then 2 each week after that to maintain the tan. US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulations prohibit more than 1 tanning sessions in a single day.
Avoid overexposure. You can tell if you have gotten too much UV exposure if your skin starts to sting while tanning. Stop tanning as soon as you feel any prickling or stinging sensations on your skin.

First and foremost, the tattoo must completely heal before exposing it to any UV rays, natural or artificial. Prematurely introducing fresh ink to either the sun or tanning bed will diminish the brilliance of the color both immediately and long term.

In a nutshell, you want to cover your tattoo either with an object that surrounds its surface area or a generous coat of sunblock with high SPF. While this won’t stop the aging process for your tattoo, it will prolong its vibrancy. Keep in mind that one application of sunblock is not enough if you’re going to spend an extended amount of time in the sun or tanning bed. Ideally, you should reapply sunscreen e very t wo hours and a solid 15 minutes before exposing your skin to the sun or tanning bed.

What About After?

After tanning, be sure to moisturize your skin as you usually would while applying a more generous portion to your tattoos. To ensure the color stays, consistently take care of your skin.

Our Tanning Beds: Three Levels to Meet Your Needs

At Bronze Tan, we offer three levels of the very best tanning beds. No matter what kind of tan you are looking for, we have the right tanning bed to meet your needs.

Level 1

If this is your first visit to a tanning bed, you may choose to start with a level 1 bed. These are basic tanning beds that offer lower-pressure bulbs. They are also a good choice for infrequent users and those looking to establish a “base tan” before going on vacation. Tanning sessions in level 1 beds usually cost less, so they are ideal for tanners on a fixed budget.

A significant drawback to level 1 beds is that they produce higher levels of UVB rays which are responsible for causing sunburn. Also, they require more extended sessions of around 15 minutes.

We offer two different level 1 beds. The KBL 3500 offers easy access due to its spring-lift canopy. It also features a body fan that the user controls. The Flair Superpower has an adjustable full-body fan.

Level 2

Level 2 beds use the same type of low-pressure bulbs, but they contain more bulbs, so the tanning session is shorter. We offer two different level 2 beds, the KBL 5600 and the Advantage 400. Both feature 12-minute maximum sessions, 48 turbo-powered body lamps, four 500-watt adjustable facial tanners, and full body ventilation.

Level 3

Level 3 beds use high-pressure bulbs. These bulbs produce lower amounts of UVB rays and higher amounts of UVA rays. UVA rays are responsible for bronzing the skin. Therefore, level 3 beds will give you a faster and longer-lasting tan. Tanning sessions in level 3 beds are shorter. They are also more expensive. These beds are best for experienced tanners.

We have two different level 3 beds. The Open Sun 1050 features a 12-minute maximum tanning time, 30 ultra-performance high-pressure bulbs, and face ventilation. The Sol-Tron has a 12-minute maximum tanning time, 52 turbo-powered body lamps, and four 600-watt adjustable facial tanners.

There are many tips and tricks to achieving the most extended life of your tan and staying sunkissed while the days are gloomy.

How to Achieve Your Best Tan

Knowing your skin is a massive bonus to achieving the best tanning results. There are about six skin types to consider, depending on how well your skin tans. If you are Type-1 Skin, which is skin that tans very little or not at all, the self-tanner will be your best friend to get a natural-looking tan with no UV exposure. Those with Type-2 skin and higher are more able to use tanning beds, alongside self-tanning options, without significant side effects. It is still essential that each skin type is taken care of after every kind of tanning session. Avoid sweating for 10 to 12 hours, and wait to exercise until after you take your first post-appointment shower.
Your first shower should be a warm water rinse with no soap. During this shower you’ll see some color run off. Don’t worry! Your tan is fine. This is just the bronzer that is used for the technician to ensure complete coverage.

Immediately after your tan, you should avoid contact with any liquids or water. There should also be no skin-to-skin contact or constant rubbing for the first six hours. You should avoid exercising or sweating for the time being. For your first post-tan shower use warm water only (no soap!). Pat your skin dry after showering (never rub!).

To continue to maintain a spray tan, follow these five easy steps:

Apply moisturizer morning and evening (avoid moisturizers with harsh mineral oils, alcohols, and sulfates). Unscented products are preferable. Cocoa butter is a good choice.
Avoid long, hot showers and baths . Avoid using loofahs, body scrubs, or body products that contain exfoliating beads. Unscented bath products are recommended. Avoid products that contain a lot of oil. Wear gloves to do housework, particularly when you’ll be getting your hands wet.

Moisturize Your Skin

For three to five days before your appointment, moisturize your skin every day to ensure an even, natural-looking tan. Do NOT use a moisturizer on the day of your appointment or immediately after your sunless tan. Wait until after your first shower.

It is essential to take proper care of your skin immediately following your appointment. These are three rules to follow after your appointment that are found on our website here .

Do not use lotion, deodorant, moisturizer, or perfume for the rest of the day.
Wait 10-12 hours before showing, sweating, or exercising.
Only wash the palms of your hands with hand sanitizer.

When Should I Get a Spray Tan Before a Big Event?

Though many people think that you should get a spray tan right before a big event, that is not quite true.

If you get an airbrush tan directly before an event, you won’t have time to shower off the “guide color” or instant bronzer that usually accompanies a sunless tanning session. This color isn’t the actual faux tan and has the tendency to look a little dirty or muddy against the skin, so you don’t want to attend a big event wearing guide color.

If you don’t shower, it’s likely that those around you will still be able to smell the DHA (the ingredient that reacts with amino acids on your skin that darkens your color) – which most self-tanner pros know is not the most desirable scent.

Your tan also likely hasn’t finished developing, so you haven’t reached peak bronze goddess status.

So When Should I Get a Spray Tan Before a Big Event?

Since spray tans usually last between seven to nine days, it’s actually best to get a spray tan 2-3 days before your big event. This allows time for your tan to fully develop and gives you time to have one rinse-off in between the tan application and the event.

Remember, when you rinse-off in the shower, use lukewarm water to avoid losing any color. Also, don’t use soap or a loofah in the shower, or you’ll risk rubbing off your tan. When you get out of the shower, simply pat dry with a towel and apply an oil-free moisturizer, so your tan stays even and glowing, not splotchy.

If you get a spray tan 4 or more days before your event, your tan will already have started to fade, and even though it should fade evenly if properly applied, the color will not be as dark and won’t pop against your outfit, like a fresh tan would. Stick to tanning 2-3 days before a big event, and you’ll be golden (in more ways than one).

Through much of history, pale skin was desired, since a tan showed you had to do manual labor outdoors. Some cultures still have this preference, but for Caucasian people in the United States and Europe, the tan is in. Here is the history of the tan.

Pale in the Past

Pale skin was favored in Greek, Roman, and Elizabethan cultures of the past. In 17th-century France, during the reign of King Louis XIV , French society stayed out of the sun and used whitening cosmetics, which also helped to hide smallpox scars.

In the 19th century during the Victorian period, women aimed for a pale appearance, wearing hats and carrying parasols. Lightening creams were available for sale, some of which contained lead as an ingredient. By the late-1800s, sunlight started to be used to treat medical conditions, including consumption, rickets, depression, and “madness.”

Early 20th-Century Tans

With increasing numbers of people laboring out of the sun in factories and mines, thoughts about the sun began to change. In 1923 after accidentally tanning in the French Riviera, French designer Coco Chanel started a trend of tanning, which began to be associated with health and leisure. The new trend fit in with shorter hemlines and rebellions against Victorian values.

In 1928, designer Jean Patou created the first tanning oil, Huile de Chaldée. In 1935, Ambre Solaire, a tanning oil that absorbed UV rays, was developed by pharmacist Eugène Schueller, whose company later became L’Oreal. Coppertone introduced their sunblock in the 1940s, and bikinis arrived in 1946, showing even more skin to the sun.

Surfin’ Sixties

After World War II, leisure time increased in the United States, allowing more time to be spent at beaches and pools. In addition, surfing and beach culture entered the mainstream in the 1950s and 1960s. By the 1960s, having a tan indicated leisure, money to travel to warm locations, and physical fitness resulting from outdoor activities. With the introduction of the sunless tanner, Man-Tan in 1959, more people were able to give this impression. Tanning beds then arrived in the United States in 1978.

Eighties to Today

Buff your body before you hit the tanning booth

Sloughing off the dead skin before your appointment puts it in prime condition to take your spray tan to the next level but exfoliating too soon after a session will shorten the life of your golden hue.

Loosen Up

Shade Matters

Most spray tans claim to last ten days. However, sometimes it can depend on the shade you choose. Often, lighter shades can fade quicker, lasting only five days, while medium shades can last a few days longer. Darker shades will last the longest, topping out at ten days. It all depends on the tanning spray’s active ingredient, dihydroxyacetone. Darker shades tend to have more of this ingredient.

Take Some Steps To Make It Last

If you want your spray tan to last longer, there are a few things you can do to keep the glow going .

Exfoliate with a natural exfoliant (think loofahs, dry brushing, and natural scrubs) every day for three days before your appointment. However, don’t go for chemical exfoliants or oil-based products, as these can hinder the tan from absorbing into your skin
Shower a few hours before your appointment, but not too close to your appointment. Give your skin at least eight hours to get back to its normal pH

The use of sunless tanners has gone up astronomically in the past few years. If you have ever used the endless self-tanners that line the shelves or stepped into a spray tan booth, you’ve probably found yourself with some orange areas of your body. Often times, if you aren’t careful, you can be left with your hands, feet, elbows, and knees turning orange when sunless tanning, sending a big alert to those around you that you are “faking and baking”. A lot of women (and men) yearn for that sun-kissed glow without those around them knowing that they didn’t achieve it naturally.
